Beautiful park in Berlin and takeaways from Michelberger and Bauhaus
A couple of weeks ago I was in Berlin for a long weekend with my boyfriend. We stayed at Michelberger hotel. I can definitely recommend the hotel, the loft room we had is spacious with nice little details, from lamps to toilet paper holders made of ropes. It has a very nice dining room which serves breakfast buffet for €9 weekdays and €15 weekends.
You enter through the gob of the same monkey decorating the beers in the bar next to the lobby. :) The lobby/bar has huge lamps made of old books… Michelberger also sports a courtyard, that we didn’t get the chance to hang out in, ‘cause the weather was somewhat chilly/rainy.
Since it was my boyfriend’s birthday on Friday, he got to choose activities! First spot was Bauhaus Design Museum, which I also really enjoyed. I wanted to buy everything in the museum shop, luckily their credit card machine didn’t work that day and we only had limited cash… We saw studies in color, form, kitchen supplies and chairs etc. Lots of chairs. My take-away was something Moholy-Nagy said when he teached at Bauhaus in the 20s: The first thing you got to ask yourself is “what do you want to express?” and then “what material is best suited to express that”? I thought that could be applied to digital media and design as well. Usually I start with the “material”, thinking for example that now I’d like to make an app, a short movie or animated infographic (the latter two are hopefully my summer projects). But perhaps I should start with what I want to express and then decide on the “material” and technique/platform (movie, photo, poster, infographic, app etc). What do you think?
